Credit Card payments
In many cases you pay the local additional charges for motorhome rental, hotel, and other services by your credit card.
If there is a credit card slip presented to you for signature, you should always check for correctness before signing.
Being back home and you receive a statement from the charge card organization which is not in accordance with the balance signed, you should immediately give written notice to the card organization, informing of the problem. Attach a copy of the slip you have in hand to your letter.
Also inform your bank about the incorrectness of the received balance, and ask them to credit back to your account the debited amount.
Anyhow, pay to the credit card corporation the correct amount you owe them.
At same time contact the company where you paid with your card (the supplier of the service) and ask them for an explanation and clearance.

Cockroaches, Cucarachas
This small or even bigger insects can be found everywhere on the world mainly in tropical and humid areas. They often live in fissures of old houses or in sandy floors and on beaches. The flying males and the females, which have only stump wings, are always attracted by all kind of eatables.

Food should be stored at any time in tight closed tin, or plastic boxes.

Even in cars, and motorhomes, if they are not absolutely kept clean, and free of any food rests, cockroaches may live.

Driving on the right hand side of the road
In Continental Europe you are driving on the right hand side of the road. The driver sits in his car on the left hand side.
After arriving in one of this countries take yourself a little time, watching the traffic.
When driving on busy roads, there is usually no problem to find the 'right side'. When using streets in remote areas you should always keep in mind that the driving situation changed from that one being used at home.
Keep on the right side enough distance to sidewalks, pedestrians, bicycle riders, parked vehicles, and those you want to overtake.
Be careful when passing other vehicles on narrow roads..
Overtaking other cars is always on the left. E.g. the car you want to overtake drives on your right hand side.
For driving on the correct side of the road, you have to be very careful when driving out from doorways, parking lots, one way streets, and at road crossings, or intersections. It helps to watch the traffic ahead, and the crossing traffic before entering the road, or before proceeding into the new direction. Always think to look to the right. Because traffic approaching from the right usually do have, or you have to give the RIGHT OF WAY.

The center line on the road gives good orientation when driving. It should always be on your left hand side. In addition: traffic coming from the opposite, should approach you on the driver's seat side e.g. pass the driver.
The gear shift of the vehicle is on your right side between the front seats. Also the lever for the hand break. You use both with your right hand. The lever for the direction indicators is on the left side of the steering wheel. That one for the windshield wipers and the lamps on the right. The pedals for the foot break, the clutch and the accelerator are in the same position as with those cars usually used for driving on the left hand side of the road.
When being a pedestrian and you want to cross the street have first a look to the left.

Electricity on travel
If you want to use on your journey your own electrical utensils please check at home already whether the voltage of your machines are in accordance with that one of the countries you are going to visit.
Shavers and hair dryers can usually been switched from 120 V to 220 V or v.v.
But there should be a check on the cycles, too. In Continental European countries the electricity power is operating on 50 Hz and not 60 Hz. This may cause a slower or a quicker (danger of overheating) run, depending on the cycles your tool has. Your own TV for instance will not run, if there is not available the exact installed number of cycles.
Also the plug connection systems may be different between countries. Best you buy at home already a multi plug adapter, which is good for different systems, and can be bought in either drug stores or electric shops.

Earthquake
In Europe this is highly unusual, however….. When traveling into an area with seismological activities, it is for sure that you will at least experience one small earthquake. In most cases you will not even notice it, or think of having a hallucination. Mainly if you stand upright or walk.
If there is a stronger one, you should know, that it will only in a very few cases take longer than one minute. If you are within a building it is advisable to proceed immediately below a door frame, or in a corner, or under a table. You should keep distance to glass walls, book cases, cupboards, wardrobes, and windows, and should not stand below objects hanging down from the ceiling.
Are you on the street you should keep away from buildings, and walls. And very important: keep calm and don't panic.

Medical help
If medical help becomes necessary during your trip, it is essential that there is a mutual way of understanding.
In many cases you may have support by international hotels, airlines, embassies and consulates. There you can obtain addresses of hospitals or doctors which are experienced in the international tourism.
Before your travel starts, you may ask with your personal medical insurance whether they also pay for medical care, if it becomes necessary abroad during your journey. Think already at home to buy a medical travel insurance.
Abroad it is usual to pay directly to a hospital or a doctor in cash. Some may take credit cards. In some cases they ask for a deposit before their first aid starts.

Right of Way in Europe
In Europe the rule is, that traffic (vehicles, motorcycles, bikes, horse carriages, etc.) coming from the right has the Right of Way on an intersection, where this is not specially regulated by traffic signs ( this is also the rule for countries with left hand side driving ).
And in consequence of this rule, all traffic coming from the left has to observe  the Right of Way of that traffic which is coming from the right.
When you have the Right of Way, and you want to make a left turn, you have to wait until all traffic coming from the opposite side have passed the intersection

Please be very carefull on this traffic rules. As in general European natives will not reduce their speed when crossing intercections, and in many countries they will never give up their right of way. Instead of doing this, they will blow their horn. Because THEY HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY!

For regulation who has the right of way, and who has to give it up, there are at many intersections road signs. Below a listing:

This means: You have the right of way only at the next intersection.

Right of Way sign

This means you are on a priority street and have the right of way on all following intersections until there is a sign advising the end of the priority street, or a Stop sign, or a Yieald sign.
The priority road sign should be  repeated at each intersection of the riority road.

This sign advises of the end of a priority road. It is shown after the last intersection, at which you had priority.

End of Priority Road sign

This sign may be shown in connection with the Right of Way signs. The strong line indicates the run of the priority road. (from your point of view it turns to the left.)

Main Road indicator

This sign means: First come to a complete stop at the next intersection, and then Give Way to all traffic ahead of you crossing the intersection.

Stop, traffic ahead has Right of Way sign

This sign advises, that the crossing traffic at the intersection has the Right of Way. If crossing road and intersection is clear, you can pass without stopping.

Traffic ahead has Right of Way sign

This sign may be shown in connection with the Stop or the Yield sign. It indicates, that the street in front of you, which has the right of way is leading from the opposite to the right. The traffic following the strong line (main road) has the Right of Way.

Main Road indicator

Another Form of the Stop sign. This sign means: First come to a complete stop at the next intersection, and then Give Way to all traffic ahead of you crossing the intersection.

Stop, traffic ahead has Right of Way

  Security on Travel
Our tips below should help to minimize risks abroad to reach a maximum of security while on travel. Nothing will happen but it is alway's better just to be on the safe side, for your (and our) convenience.
  • Don't pick up hitchhikers.
  • Don't stop for other vehicles having a break-down. Take a note of the vehicle's license number and inform the next police station, a repair shop, or a gasoline station.
  • Don't stop when passengers in a passing vehicle give advises to you for being something wrong with your car. Take a note of the other vehicle's license number and continue your trip till to the next gasoline station, where you may check.
  • Don't drive in foreign countries after sunset.
  • Before you step into your parked vehicle, have a look into the interior. Check also the floor space before the rear bench.
  • When you got lost, you may not ask passengers on the road. Drive to the next gasoline station for information.
  • Don't park for the night on the road if possible, or on a parking or a rest area. Always try to stay in a campground / caravan park. Or try to find fellow motorhomes so you can overnight together which is to prefer over overnighting alone.
  • Don't wear jewelry on the street. Keep your camera, a bag, or similar items on a strap around your neck and shoulder in front of your body.
  • When visiting local markets, or going by bus, or underground be careful of pickpockets.
  • If staying in a hotel room lock always the door with an available drag-chain. Open it only to those persons you know.

  Where to camp
Due to security reasons you should always try to stay for the night on a campground (Caravan Parks - Trailer Parks - Rv Parks - Campsites, etc.).

If you cannot reach a campground in due time, you may park close to housing areas, or villages, or join other motorhome campers.

Do not rest on beaches. Oncoming tide may be a big danger for you and the vehicle. Also saltwater creates corrosion damage to the car, for which you are fully liable. No insurance will cover this.

Don't rest in dried creeks, dips, or rivers. Heavy rain fall far away from you may inundate your whole rest area within short time.

If possible, don't park your car under trees and open a hatch in the roof. Animals may fall down and enter your vehicle from outside.
