General Informations - The EURO Currency 

Starting on 1st of January 2001 there was a new currency introduced in Europe, which is called EURO. The symbol for it is €. 1 EURO (€) is divided into 100 Euro CENT.

From that day on the Euro (€ ) is the only official currency in the participating 12 European Countries: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

There are several Euro ( € ) coins ; 1, 2 and 5 cent coins. 10, 20 and 50 cent coins and 1 and 2 Euro coins. The rest is papermoney ; 5, 10, 20 and 50 Euro bills, 100, 200 and 500 Euro bills.

The conversion rates between the EURO ( € ) and the old twelve national currencies were fixed. In all participating countries you can only still pay with the Euro ( € ) coins and notes. Participating countries are :

Austria (used to be Shillings)
Belgium (used to be Francs)
Finland (used to be Finmarks)
France (used to be Francs)
Germany (used to be Deutsch Marks)
Greece (used to be Drachmas)
Ireland (used to be Pounds)
Italy (used to be Liras)
Luxembourg (used to be Francs)
Netherlands (used to be Guildes)
Portugal (used to be Escudos)
Spain (used to be Pesetas)
